A bunch of crap that should mean nothing to anybody

I was thinking today, now that Ron Asheton has died, I bet this is the year, after 13 or 14 years of eligibility, that they put The Stooges in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. The hall of fame loves putting dead people (Joe Strummer, Joey Ramone) immediately in, it gets them more attention. It's just absurd that it would take a founding member's death to get this one-of-a-kind band that's influenced more rock than just about anyone to get the douches who vote people into the hall of fame to give them the recognition they deserve.

I read this yesterday and it made me furious:

"At one point Suzan Evans lamented the choices being made because there weren't enough big names that would sell tickets to the dinner. That was quickly remedied by dropping one of the doo-wop groups being considered in favor of a 'name' artist ... I saw how certain pioneering artists of the 50s and early 60s were shunned because there needed to be more name power on the list, resulting in 70s superstars getting in before the people who made it possible for them. Some of those pioneers still aren't in today."

Nothing new of course, and what do you expect when Jann Wenner is in charge of the whole thing? It just re-ignited my ire the last couple days. I used to be way into the Hall Of Fame, paid as much attention to it as possible. I even wrote a letter to them in '99 letting them know some of the people they hadn't put in. Yeah, that was a pretty douchey move on my part. But they're just idiots. And now Wenner is saying it was a mistake to put the Hall Of Fame in Cleveland, that it should be in New York City. FUCK NEW YORK CITY! What's special about New York? Doesn't everything in New York seem like it's a dime a dozen? I would consider visiting the museum in Cleveland, but never New York. Sometimes I'm pretty sure music would be better off if Rolling Stone never existed, and that we'd all be better be off if New York would just sink into the Hudson. It just bugs me. Reading that Wikipedia article, the "big" scandal they apparently made out of putting Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five in before The Dave Clark Five, I don't really have much problem with that. No problem at all really. Honestly that doesn't even seem like a contest. Who had more impact? Grandmaster Flash obviously! Dave Clark Five was pleasant enough and had some big hits, but other than that, why should I really care?

However, it would be pretty sweet to see The Stooges and Sonic Youth go into the Hall Of Fame the same year, cuz I think Sonic Youth is one of the only bands that could match the intensity of Fun House Stooges. But what are the chances Sonic Youth goes in their first year? Zilch. I'd love to see Metallica go in too. Wouldn't those three getting their due at least make for decent TV? Wouldn't happen though. Noooooooooo, cuz the Madonnas of the music world, those will get us ratings/money. And ZZ Top? Really? I like ZZ Top, but Hall of Fame? And John Mellencamp gets in that quick? Good grief. Whatever. This is all crap I've been complaining about for years, as has anybody else who pays attention to those idiots that run the Hall, but what's the internet good for if not for publishing complaints?

In other news, in about the past 10 days I've worked my way through most of the first two seasons of The Shield. I'm actually less surprised by how fast I'm going through it than I am surprised that I ever turn it off. Other stuff I've been viewing: going through several of the VHS's I've been buying trying to watch movies that I should've seen a long time ago. For instance, since the Christmas break started, I've gone through the first two Die Hards and had a little Steven Seagal marathon of Under Siege, Under Siege 2, Hard To Kill, Above The Law, and Out For Justice. Desperately need to get my hands on the VHS of Marked For Death. Then tonight I also watched Commando. So much flexing. I miss macho. I wish Black Dynamite was going to be in theaters.

Oh well. What else can I put here? Two "Seen On TV" things that I want: Sham-Wow and Snuggie.

  1. YES! Sham-Wow and Snuggie!!! The two biggest cults on television.

But yep, I seriously agree with the HoF rant. The fact that Melloncamp is in there is INSANE! Is Bryan Adams going to go in then? Cause he rocks a hell of a lot harder than the cougar. Here's the current possibilities, right?

    Jeff Beck
    Chic
    Wanda Jackson
    Little Anthony and the Imperials
    Metallica
    Run-D.M.C.
    the Stooges
    War
    Bobby Womack

That's cool I guess... I just recently got into Bobby Womack and Metallica would just be ridiculous. Chic would be cool except that Tony Thompson is dead, which makes me sad... the stooges are an absolute definite... Here are some that I cannot freaking believe aren't in there...

    Peter Gabriel
    Genesis
    Phil Collins
    Brian Eno
    Depeche Mode
    The Replacements

Actually, I'm just going to end it there because I am getting far too mad when I think about those compared to Cougarcamp.

I have GOT to go to sleep!!!

  2. And thank you for posting the Black Dynamite trailer! I have been meaning to check that out for a while and it absolutely lived up to everything I was hoping for. Yikes it looks GOOD!

  3. Whoa yeah! Black Dynamite starring Spawn. If it's not going to come out in theaters, then we should probably rent out the Little Theatre in the name of the Campus Musician's Union and project it.

As for the current possibilites, I'll address them here:

Jeff Beck - I guess I don't mind. He's made a few incredible records and it's hard to deny his playing. He should probably at least have been put in there long before Eric Clapton was put in there three times.

Little Anthony and the Imperials - I do like doo-wop

Metallica - I would love to see it. They absolutely deserve it and even though there is certainly metal that isn't in there and could be put in there before them, Metallica isn't a bad place to start.

Run DMC - They should get in of course, and it would be nice if Aerosmith wasn't mentioned during their induction.

Bobby Womack - I'm on board. Deserving. I'm on board for legit R&B/Soul

The Stooges - Obviously. It's about time.

Chic - I'm not sure how to judge that one. It feels like more of a nod to disco than a legit pick. I really like Chic, what I've heard, and as far as disco goes I'd rather see them go in than some other crap. And obviously Nile Rodgers has done a ton as a producer he deserves to get recognized for. I'm not sure about this one. I get the feeling about Chic that there could be more to them than I know so I wouldn't judge it.

Wanda Jackson and War - Even though they're nothing alike I'll address them all at once. I think the Hall of Fame uses picks like these to address genres that are not easy to represent, but do they really deserve an elite nod? Like, if you need to find a woman that could rock a snarl, Wanda Jackson is IT. If you NEED a soul/Latin/jazz/blues/reggae/rock band (had to rely on allmusic there) then I guess War is your band. But just because they're representative of a group that maybe only a small number of bands belong to, should they get in before better groups that might belong to genres that have heftier representation already? And then that brings up a good point when you bring up Genesis. Looking through the list it seems like prog is completely disrespected. As much crap as it gets, and whether it deserves it or not, prog is a big deal. But I think that's where the bias comes in. Dance music is popular now, so if we load the card up with dance music, we'll get some viewers, or we'll get talked about. Whatever, what it comes down to, I think a band like Rush, even though I've never been a listener, probably deserves it just as much if not more than a band like War.

What it really comes down to is this. I just finished a roll of wrapping paper so now I have a long empty cardboard roll. If I combine that with a Snuggie, I'm going to go low-level Jedi all over Fredericksburg.

  4. That is a wonderous image indeed!

Prog and Fusion have indeed been dissed:

    Yes
    Mahavishnu Orchestra
    Weather Report
    Al Di Meola
    King Crimson

AHHH!! The list goes on... they should just do one massive Prog/Fusion year and blow my mind.

  5. Final list has been released. It is:

    The performer inductees are:
    Jeff Beck
    Little Anthony & the Imperials
    Metallica
    Run-D.M.C.
    Bobby Womack

    Early Influence Category Inductee:
    Wanda Jackson

    Sidemen Category Inductees:
    Bill Black
    DJ Fontana
    Spooner Oldham

I didn't realize Wanda Jackson was up as an early influence rather than a regular inductee. That makes a lot more sense. Have to say I'm really surprised that they STILL haven't put The Stooges in. I guess Iggy Pop has to die before it'll get them the attention they want. Metallica should be pretty fun though. Otherwise it doesn't get me too too excited.

Thing that gets me most excited is definitely the sideman category. A couple of Elvis sidemen and Spooner Oldham. I love Elvis and I'll enjoy watching that but I have to admit the credentials are a little skimpy. And they'll probably skip it on the broadcast anyway. Spooner Oldham gets me real excited though. Genius musician who has backed up everyone and written some incredible stuff, and not only that but from what I've seen in interviews a real amiable guy too. I would do him just about any favor he requested of me.
